While the positive aspects of gambling are well-known, the negative consequences of gambling are equally as well-known.

The study also identified several factors associated with problem gambling. One important factor is frequency. The researchers used a population-based survey of Detroit older adults in 2001. The study asked participants about frequency of casino visits, attitudes toward gambling, and the likelihood of pathological gambling in this population. The data provided a basis for analyzing the relationship between gambling and mental illness. Approximately 11% of respondents reported that they had visited a casino more than three times a month.

The Baby Boom generation is projected to grow to be 19 million people by 2050. The projected growth of this group will amount to 500% in 60 years. Additionally, according to Harrah’s Entertainment, the typical casino gambler was a 46-year-old woman from a middle-class household with an income above the median. Older adults with more free time to spend often gamble.
